Aging in place in Dayton
Dayton (ZIP 41074) is a Northern Kentucky river city next to Bellevue, with tight streets of well-preserved late-1800s and early-1900s homes near the Ohio River.
Two things collide in houses this old. Modern thermostatic valve bodies are deeper than what they replace, and the shallow stud walls here sometimes cannot take one without furring the wall out. And a walk-in tub is taller, so the surround runs higher than the old tile line. Both change where the finished wall sits, which matters where original trim meets it. We check both against the specific model before ordering.

Common questions from Dayton homeowners
Usually, but sometimes only by furring the wall out slightly. We measure the wall depth against the specific valve before ordering rather than after.
Yes, the surround has to run higher than the old tile line. Where original trim meets it, we plan that junction rather than discovering it.
