A bathroom floor is not a finish. It is the waterproofing plane the rest of the room sits on. Done correctly, with a sound substrate, proper falls and a bonded assembly, it protects the structure beneath for decades. Done as a surface laid over whatever was there, it fails quietly and takes the subfloor with it.
It is also the cheapest moment to fix level, threshold and door clearance problems that are expensive to touch later.
Nobody photographs a subfloor. It is still the part that decides whether your bathroom is sound in fifteen years, and it is where we will not cut anything.

Can new tile go over the existing floor?
We almost always take the old floor up. It lets us check the subfloor underneath and keeps the new floor from sitting too high at the door and at the toilet flange.
Luxury vinyl or tile in a bathroom?
Luxury vinyl plank is warmer and softer underfoot, waterproof, and kinder to a dropped glass. Porcelain tile lasts longer, handles heavy wear and pairs naturally with a heated floor.
Is a heated floor expensive to run?
Not usually. An electric mat only warms the floor area it covers and runs on a programmable thermostat, so it heats for the hours you use the room rather than all day.
Do you take out the toilet and vanity?
The toilet always comes out so the floor can run underneath it, and it goes back on a new wax ring. A vanity with a toe-kick can sometimes stay put, and we decide that on the site visit.
How do we keep the grout looking new?
Seal cement grout once it has cured and reseal it as the manufacturer recommends, and avoid acidic or bleach-based cleaners. Epoxy grout costs more up front but resists stains without sealing.
