Before you replace a tub in St. Bernard
St. Bernard (ZIP 45217) is its own city, completely surrounded by Cincinnati, built up around the Procter & Gamble Ivorydale complex with a dense grid of early-1900s homes.
A like-for-like tub swap leaves the venting alone, which is one reason it is a straightforward job. But where the waste moves (a different tub hand, a repositioned unit) the trap needs a vent within a set distance or draining water siphons it dry and the room starts smelling of the sewer. In tight early-1900s houses the existing vent is often not where a new position needs it. It is invisible work, and it is not optional.

Questions we hear in St. Bernard
Because without a vent within the permitted distance, draining water siphons the trap dry and sewer gas comes back into the room. It shows up weeks later if it is skipped.
Largely, yes. A like-for-like swap usually leaves the venting untouched, which is part of why it is the cheaper job.
