Keeping a tub in your North Fairmount bathroom
North Fairmount (ZIP 45225) is a west-side hillside neighborhood above the Mill Creek valley, with streets of older early-1900s homes.
Porcelain-on-steel tubs get dismissed as the cheap option and they should not be. The surface is genuinely hard-wearing (it is fired enamel, not a coating) and the only real drawbacks are that it cools faster than cast iron and drums if it is not bedded properly. Bed it correctly and both largely disappear. In this housing it is frequently the sensible choice, and we would rather put the difference into the substrate behind the surround.

Common questions from North Fairmount homeowners
No. Some steel tubs ship with a factory sound-deadening pad and others are meant to sit in a mortar bed, and we follow whichever the maker specifies. Ask to see that installation sheet alongside your quote.
Into the substrate behind the surround, the valve and the waste assembly. Those decide how long the installation lasts, and they cost the same whichever tub sits in front of them.
