Keeping a tub in your Montgomery bathroom
Montgomery (ZIP 45242) is an upscale northeast-side city with a preserved historic district of 19th-century buildings and surrounding neighborhoods of established and newer homes.
Freestanding tubs are the most requested upgrade at this end of the market and the one with the most hidden cost. The floor has to carry a concentrated load, the filler needs plumbing up through the floor or a wall with no apron to hide it, showering over one is awkward and usually means a separate shower elsewhere, and cleaning around it is a job. Where the room and the budget support all of that it is superb. Where they do not, we will say so.

What Montgomery homeowners ask us
Where the floor can carry it and the room allows a separate shower, yes. They are superb. The costs people miss are the floor-mounted filler, the structural check and the fact that showering over one rarely works well.
Rarely well. Without a surround the water goes on the floor, so a freestanding tub usually assumes a separate shower in the same room. That is the decision to make before falling for the tub.
