Do we need a permit just to open a wall?

If the wall is load-bearing, yes: in Anderson Township that means a Hamilton County building permit with the beam shown on the drawings. A non-bearing partition is simpler, but the wiring and plumbing that usually run through it still need their own permits when they move.

Updating a Turpin Hills kitchen without losing the house

Turpin Hills (ZIP 45244) is an unincorporated Anderson Township community on the east side, characterized by larger, well-treed residential parcels.

The houses here are generally substantial and largely post-war onward, which means predictable construction and kitchens that are dated rather than inadequate. Floor area is seldom the constraint, so the work tends to be about connection: opening the kitchen to family space and reworking a plan that separated them. Anderson Township and Hamilton County govern, with no village or city process to satisfy.
