What usually needs upgrading?

The electrical service and the old cast-iron drain are the two usual items. Before we visit, note the amp rating on your main breaker and whether the drain under the sink turns from plastic to heavy black pipe below the floor; both tell us what the quote has to cover.

Updating a Erlanger kitchen without losing the house

Erlanger (ZIP 41018) is a Kenton County city west of Covington, settled largely with mid-century and later housing, lying close to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

A house from the 1950s or 1960s is old enough to bring the things people associate with older homes: cast-iron waste that has drained for decades, an electrical service sized for the appliances of its day, and an original kitchen closed off from the rest of the main floor. The good news is that construction of that era is generally straightforward to work in, so the surprises are fewer than in a genuinely Victorian house.
